bereavement

The grief you can feel when you lose someone close can be the most traumatic and heartbreaking experience. Each person manages the loss in a different way, often this is influenced by age, religious beliefs or even previous bereavement experiences.

Many people experience a range of feelings, from physical and mental pain, to anger, depression and guilt. These feelings will usually change over time, as you learn to cope with your loss, adapt to the change and then look to the future.

This process of grieving is important and usually occurs over a long period of time. Again the time needed will vary from person to person but it is not uncommon for this to take months if not years. This ‘long road’ until you feel recovered may at times feel like you will never be yourself again and no two people’s experience is ever the same.

There are recognised stages of grief from shock through to eventual resolution where you have come to terms with, and accepted the loss. Even if you have others around to support you at this time you may find it difficult to talk, perhaps because of their own loss, so having another trained person to support you can be of benefit.

At Steven James Counselling we recognise that many people can find it helpful to explore the range of feelings experienced during this bereavement process and can offer support as you work through the loss.
